Understanding how lists behave in your email editor

Variety is the spice of life, but when it comes to email editors it's also a PITA!

You see, some email editors add padding to lists (both numbered and bullet varieties), while some don't. Gmail (probably the most popular email client on the planet) adds padding, as do Fastmail and Outlook. HEY and Apple Mail (on the Mac) don't. Yay! 🫠

To demonstrate this visually, I've typed a line of text in each of the most popular email editors, pressed enter once to start a new line, then inserted a list. Here's what they they each look like:

There's no correct approach here. You can argue the case either way, but if you're building an app to take these emails and turn them into blog posts, you have to take a side.

I've flip-flopped on this position but now Pagecord takes the side of the majority and applies margins to lists.

So, whenever you're composing a blog post, regardless of which email client you're using, DON'T insert an empty line between the paragraph and the list. If you're using Gmail, Fastmail, Outlook or Mail on iOS, this will look fine – what you see in your editor will resemble what you see on your blog. At the end of the day, if you emailed a blog post and it doesn't look quite right, just log into Pagecord and edit the post. If it looks good in the Pagecord editor, it will look good on your blog!
